29 Day until Nepal...Video time!
Pre departure orientation was on a Sunday March 27...It's already the 31st...29 days until Nepal... It was with Ken Finch, Victor Elderton, Frances Krusekopf and Enid Elliot (my teacher!) This work shop had me thinking of the child's physical, social , emotional, creative and intellectual development. And of course Nepal is on my mind...and so much more...:/

Spring 2011 has begun...
Hello, Today was my orientation with the field school i'll be attending this Spring 2011. I'm heading to Nepal for a practicum experience and I am thrilled to be going somewhere different. I just hope I remember that once I get there :) I'll be taking a short flight from to Vancouver where I will board a plane in the early morning to Hong Kong where I'll live in the airport... Then its off to Kathmandu!!! This experience is going to have me challening my own personal levels of comfort. I'll be living with my 7 other class mates (6 gals and one gent) and there will be a cook!!! The orientation today had our field instructors telling us to be good, the nurse told us not to "do it" (honestly an educational experience I liked her stories and she got a few people to share some good ones by asking if we had any) and finally the counsellor came in and asked us some really good questions about our values and goals and to keep in mind that stress may be a factor and to recognize it before its too late!!! I hope Kathmandu has a treadmill.... After the practicum experience with the Kathmandu community, school, orphanage and community projects we will head to Chitwan National Park. This experience will allow us to enjoy the lavish wild life and land of Nepal, something I will have to share with you all through pictures and stories as they happen... Wifi isn't something that I can just walk into while staying in Nepal. I will blog as much as possible and hopefully share a positive experience that will challenge and excite me. I'm hoping the children in Nepal will be patient with me as I learn their language and customs work to climatize myself. Culture shock will be something I am not looking forward to but like my friend Sarah (UVIC student who is in my field study group) said: "It's something that's going to happen so deal with it." So true, i'm so happy my group is down to earth and friendly. I feel this is going to be a learning experience that i'll never forget and hopefully my group feels the same. Soo, The fundraiser IT'S ALL FOR NEPAL is still happening in Victoria Friday, April 15 at the Upper Deck and in Delta on Saturday, April 23. I'm going to bring toothbrushes and toothpaste and teach some kids how to brush their teeth with songs that practise the motions! haha really. I hope i'm this enthused during my experience because right now I feel pure anticipation!!!

Early Childhood Educators Are Worth IT!

This website is related to an assignment I am involved in to do with activism. I am to pick an issue I feel passionate about and then act on it.
I have chosen to advocate for Early Childhood educators. As an active quality childcare educator and provider, I know that the first 0-6 years are the most formative years of every child’s life.
I am worried about my future as an active ECE as the Cost of living is quite high and the pay scale for ECE teachers do not reflect the hard work and effort that is put into the children and families.
Bringing qualified early childhood educators to the field and maintaining them over the long term is important because the longevity of well-qualified staff supports positive outcomes for young children.
With your help to raise awareness for the availability of consistent, quality child care for all Canadian parents (which will help stabilize the Canadian economy as a whole) will draw attention to the correlation between a living wage for early childhood educators and the quality of service provided to children and their families due to the effort it takes to run a quality program.
$20/Hour StrategyThe Early Childhood field is in crisis in BC – For many ECEs, the hourly wages/benefits are too low to make a living wage. The Early Childhood Educators of BC believes that the benchmark of $20 an hour is a realistic entry level wage for early childhood educators.

Raise awareness about the importance an ECE has made in your child's life by:
1. writing a letter to the government on how an ECE has helped to make a strong foundation in your child's life.
2. Making your letter a template and giving it to the other parents within your child's childcare facility.
3. Acknowledge your child's ECE and give them a template too. In many cases ECEs work at more than one childcare facility.
4. Be aware that because you do care, it will make a huge impact on any ECEs life.
Descriptions of Early Childhood Educators
Basic Education: the education required to meet the academic requirements to become a licensed Early Childhood Educator. Typically, training requires 10 months or more of study.
Early Childhood Educator (1year): an individual who has completed the basic early childhood education training and first aid; has the required character reference; and has been licensed as an Early Childhood Educator (5 year) by the Early Childhood Educator Registry.
Infant/Toddler Educator: a qualified Early Childhood Educator who has completed post basic infant/toddler education requirements to provide care for children from birth to 36 months and has been licensed as an Infant/Toddler Educator by the Early Childhood Educator Registry.
Post-basic education: the education required to meet the academic requirements for either infant/toddler education or special needs education.
Special Needs Educator: a qualified Early Childhood Educator who has completed post basic special needs education requirements to provide care for children requiring extra support from birth to school age and has been licensed as a Special Needs Educator by the Early Childhood Educator Registry.
